A doctoral thesis at the College of Engineering, University of Basra, discusses Numerical Modeling of Flow and Sediment Transport in the Tigris River: Assessment of River Bank Erosion Control Measures

Researcher Fardous Nassif Jassim's doctoral thesis was discussed at the College of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Basra, entitled Numerical Modeling of Flow and Sediment Transport in the Tigris River: Assessment of River Bank Erosion Control Measures
A considerable level drop in Tigris River has been observed due to the reduction in upstream water flow. There are many problems concurrent with this drop like the transport of sediment and its trapped which decrease the ability of river during flood. This problem can be seen downstream Kut barrage which is the main hydraulic structure that control and distribute the flow for southern area of Iraq. The aim of study predicatesediment transport for reach of Tigris River in Wasit governorate, Iraq using MIKE21 FM. Moreover, analysis of bed material for 11.5 km using Arc Gis for period Oct 2023- May 2024
The results included propose several scenarios to represented the spatial and temporal change of hydrodynamic and sediment transport. the result reveal that the velocity ranged 0.2-0.9 m/s at most area and 1.6 m/s at another one. Also, the maximum water level record 13m at different period. Concerning the inverted change of bed river, erosion value recorded 8 cm while the sedimentation 8-25 cm in different locations of study area.
‏This research also included generation of a new formula to predict the suspended sediment load for the study area based on multiple linear regression techniques and dimensional analysis performed by the statistical software IBM SPSS program.
