In a significant scientific achievement that reflects the research progress at the University of Basrah, a distinguished scientific paper by professors from the Department of Civil Engineering at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah—Dr. Kifah Muhammad Khudair, Dr. Ahmed Sakban Khudair, and Dr. Muhammad Hamid Subhan—was published in the Open Engineering journal, published by the German publishing house De Gruyter. The journal is an international peer-reviewed journal indexed in the Scopus database and falls within the second quartile (Q2) of the international scientific journal classification. The research, titled "Exploitation of landfill gas vs. refuse-derived fuel with landfill gas for electrical power generation in Basrah City/South of Iraq," examined the feasibility of generating clean electricity from solid waste in the city of Basrah by utilizing landfill gas and refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The study results showed that implementing a dual system combining RDF and LFG could achieve an annual production of between 26.4 and 36.1 megawatts of electricity, representing an important step toward enhancing reliance on sustainable energy sources and reducing harmful emissions from burning fossil fuels. This research represents a notable scientific achievement that adds to the University of Basrah's long list of accomplishments in the field of renewable energy and sustainable waste management. It underscores the university's pioneering role in supporting applied research that contributes to serving Iraqi society and achieving sustainable environmental development.
