It is established at the same time when the college of engineering in the university of Basrah founded in 1964. It is one of the largest departments in the college as far as the number of students and the teaching staff are concerned. There are 74 professors with MSc and PhD in different civile engineering specialties: constructions, soil, environments, and roads.
It demands 4 years for undergraduate study. The syllabi are well prepared to provide students with both information and skills that the civil engineer needs in different fields of his work. 2 years are required for the MSc study and 3 for the PhD.
