Researcher Huda Sabah Jaafar's master's thesis was discussed at the College of Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering, University of Basra, entitled An Industrial IoT-based Smart Control System"
The thesis focused on developing an integrated framework that combines Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies and programmable logic controllers (Siemens S7-314 PLCs). The goal is to enhance interoperability between industrial systems, provide remote monitoring capabilities, and ensure secure and efficient data exchange.
The study relied on applying the proportional-integral control (PI Control) algorithm to manage the level and temperature of fluids in a tank within a thermal system designed as a prototype for testing the smart network system, based on direct readings from and to the process. The researcher also developed an integrated practical system based on advanced platforms such as Node-RED, KEPServerEX, MQTT Explorer, Firebase, and Google Sheets, enabling the overcoming of traditional limitations in monitoring and control. She also tested various industrial protocols to achieve an industrial design characterized by reliability, flexibility, speed, scalability, and interoperability.
The thesis also included the design of interactive interfaces (HMIs) for displaying, updating, and reporting data, as well as data storage and reporting. Security aspects were also emphasized by employing TLS encryption and multi-factor authentication technologies, as well as using technologies such as tunneling and tools such as ngrok and Prosys OPC to ensure secure access to the system.
The experimental test results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed system in increasing response accuracy, reducing latency, and enhancing flexibility in integration with industrial systems, making it an important step towards developing smart, safer, and more efficient control systems in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments. It is worth noting that the student has published three research papers in international journals and conferences, contributing to the advancement of industrial automation and the development of modern control systems while enhancing industrial information security.
