The College of Engineering at the University of Basra, Department of Architecture, participated in the Basra Rises Competition, which was held on the sidelines of the Gerso Expo for Investment and Construction in Basra 2023 and on the grounds of international fairs. The Department of Architecture included the competition within the activities of the exhibition, in which architects, architectural offices, and architecture students from various sectors participated. The competition witnessed the presence of the Assistant Governor of Basra, Professor Hassan Al-Najjar, the Assistant President of the University of Basra for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Ali Hussein Rashk, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr. Mufid Turki Rashid, and a number of officials in Basra Governorate. The competition, which is considered the first in Iraq, aims to encourage architects and students to advance the reality of the architectural profession to provide the city with projects of distinctive architectural value. It also aims to activate the principle of fair competition among participants and honor the distinguished winning works. A jury was formed to evaluate the works with the participation of an elite group of architecture professors in Iraqi universities, which included the University of Baghdad, the University of Technology, and the University of Wasit, in addition to a number of teachers from the Department of Architecture at the University of Basra. The winning projects are scheduled to be announced on the closing day of the exhibition, which will be Saturday, 11/25. 2023. The head of the Department of Architecture, Dr. Hamid Hayab Samir, participated in the opening ceremony, in addition to a number of teachers and students.
