Assistant lecturer Nawras Talib Jassim, a lecturer in the Chemical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, University of Basra, has obtained a patent in chemical engineering

In this study 2-amino-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1, 6-naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile
was synthesized by the one-pot reaction of three-component (4-hydroxy
benzaldehyde, malononitrile, and 4-amino pyridine) in the presence of
magnesium oxide nanoparticles as a catalyst. The structure of the prepared
compound was confirmed using FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR
spectroscopies. It was approved as a multifunctional lubricating oil additive
(copper corrosion inhibitor, anti-rust, and antioxidant) by mixing with the
base medium lubricating oil (type 60 stock) provided by the Iraqi Midland
Refineries Company/Al-Dura according to the American Society of Testing
and Materials ASTM-D130, ASTM-D665, and Institute of Petroleum's testing
method, oxidation stability test (IP-280), respectively. Other oil properties
also improved slightly, such as viscosity index (VI), pour point (P.P.), and
total base number (TBN)
