As part of the scientific activities of the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah, a new research paper has been published in a journal indexed in the first quartile (Q1) of Scopus and published by Elsevier, indexed in the Clarivate (Web of Science) database. The paper, in the field of civil engineering, was authored by Professor Dr. Ahmed Naseh Ahmed Hamdan and Assistant Professor Dr. Dina Ali Yassin from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Basrah, and PhD student Mays Ibrahim Al-Saidi from the Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering at the University of Mosul. Sustainability through Integrated Hydrological-Hydraulic Modelling for Rainwater Harvesting in Arid Regions: A Case Study of Ali Al-Gharbi, Southern Iraq
This research represents a significant scientific contribution as it is a comprehensive study conducted on the Ali Al-Gharbi basin in southern Iraq, an area that has not been previously addressed in specialized hydrological studies despite its strategic importance. The research team conducted field surveys to assess the situation on the ground, enabling them to develop an optimal solution based on accurate, real-world data, not just theoretical models. This research establishes a sustainable engineering solution that transforms wasted flood energy into a strategic water resource. It achieves this through an innovative design for a conveyance channel that functions as a smart linear reservoir, storing water seasonally and providing flood protection. This lays the foundation for water security in semi-arid regions suffering from data scarcity.
