A master's thesis at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah examined (applications to represent the two-dimensional surface runoff of the Shatt Al-Arab River) by the student Alaa Al-Din Taher Najm
The thesis dealt with a study of simulating a non-stationary model with a 1D/2D installation using the HEC-RAS 5.0.3 program in the study area of the Shatt Al-Arab and Tigris rivers extending from behind Nazim Qala Salih in the governorate of Maysan to the Abu Flous area in the district of Abi Al-Khasib, and the Euphrates and Karma Ali rivers were entered. In the simulation model
Field measurements were made to calculate the 27 cross-sections in the study area, in addition to the 216 sections obtained by the Planning Department - the strategic study in the Ministry of Water Resources. Data on expenditures and water levels for the 2014 water year were collected from the Directorate of Water Resources in the governorate Basra Completed the entry of the hydrological information necessary for the operation of the Hacras program, and the drainage was adopted on a daily basis at the top of the study area from behind the Nazim Qala’at Saleh.
The program was run for several cases of flow in the absence of a regulatory dam symbolized by the symbol A and the case of a regulatory block symbolized by the symbol B. Three scenarios were developed for the cases of operating the gates of the regulatory block, in the case of B1 the gates are open throughout the operation period and the case of B2 in which the gates are running Automatically (closes with palm and opens with islands) in the case of B3 where the gates are closed only for a period of 27 days. It was observed in case B1 that no flooding occurred except for a rise in the river water levels at the front of the regulatory dam, and in case B2 it was observed that a flood occurred only in the case of a flood wave of 200m3/s and on the right side of the Shatt al-Arab from the front of the regulatory dam up to station 3.2 in the governorate center Basra, as for case B3, it was observed that a flood occurred in both cases on the right side of the Shatt al-Arab River from the front of the regulatory dam to station 3.2 in the center of Basra governorate.
It was concluded that the regulatory block is not suitable in the case of closed gates or gates that operate automatically, as it was observed that the water levels of the Shatt al-Arab have risen and the flooding of the lands surrounding the right side of the Shatt al-Arab, and since the level of land in Basra Governorate is low, it is affected by the rise in water levels of the Shatt al-Arab, which leads To flood the land with water
