A master’s thesis at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah examined (the optimal design of reinforced concrete ribbed ceilings in one direction) by the student (Noor Khayoun Saeed Al-Aidi)

The thesis focused on solving the problem of optimal structural design for one-way ribbed concrete roofs using genetic algorithms and a similar method of annealing.

The design variables included: the effective depth of the roof, the distance between the ribs, the bottom width of the rib, the upper rib width, the height of the bridge, the distance between the rebar shear in the ribs, the diameter of the rebar for the thickness of the roof, the distance between the rebar for the thickness of the roof, the dimension of the diagonal tensile fibers of concrete About the tie axis, the width of the bridge

The constraints of this issue included the construction determinants of ribbed concrete slabs in one direction according to the recommendations of the American code (ACI-code-14) and restrictions on the upper thickness of the ceiling to provide the requirements of fire and the constraints of the minimum and maximum limits for the amount of reinforcing steel in the ceilings

The results of the study showed that when discussing the effect of the length of the space (12-4) meters, it was found that the ratio (total depth of the ceiling / length of the space) ranged (1/4-1/8) and (1/5-1/18) using genetic algorithms and the method of Similar to annealing, respectively, to find the optimal solution. The results obtained from the study showed the compressive strength of concrete with a range of (60MPa-25MPa), which showed the optimum ratios of the total depth of the roof / length of the space (1/5-1/9) using genetic algorithms
