The College of Engineering at the University of Basrah participated in the first specialized conference in the treatment and destruction of waste, which was held by the Department of Chemical, Biological and Military Hazardous Waste Treatment and Destruction to open an advanced plant for the destruction of oil waste in Basrah. Which was held under the patronage of the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Abdul Jalil at the Oil Cultural Center in Basra Governorate

The dean of the college, Prof. Dr. Rabie Hashem Thajeel, the administrative assistant dean, and a large number of professors and college employees attended. In his opening speech, the Minister indicated about large financial returns that will go to the Iraqi state treasury from this national project with the help of national cadres working in science and technology institutions, after those sums went to companies. He added, "These remnants threaten the environment of Iraq, drain its money, and others benefit from its returns."

The Dean indicated that the tasks of the department were discussed to treat and destroy waste, chemicals and others, and that the aim of holding the conference is to rid the Iraqi environment of the effects of these biological waste and hazardous materials on humans and society and to improve their quality to be a clean environment free of pollutants by using the latest technologies and employing qualified expertise in this the field .
