The College of Engineering at the University of Basra Strengthens its Scientific Cooperation with the Southern Fertilizer Company

Within the framework of enhancing cooperation between academic institutions and the industrial sector, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering held a joint meeting with the Southern Fertilizer Company. The meeting, attended by several faculty members from the department and senior company staff, aimed to develop scientific and research collaboration and bridge the gap between academia and modern industrial applications.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was represented at the meeting by: Dr. Raad Jamal Jassim, representing the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Jaafar Khalaf Ali; and Dr. Rafel Mahmoud Lafteh. The Southern Fertilizer Company was represented by: Senior Chief Engineer Ghassan Abdul-Razzaq Abdul-Ali (Training); Senior Chief Engineer Basim Mohsen Abdul-Wahid (Research and Development); and Senior Chief Engineer Ali Abdul-Hussein (Engineering Inspection).

The meeting addressed several important topics, most notably the development of summer training programs for department students. An agreement was reached to prepare an advanced training program encompassing various company departments related to the specialization, with a focus on practical aspects in occupational safety, engineering inspection, vibration mitigation, and maintenance and operation. It was also agreed to organize a closing program where students will present the skills and experiences they gained during their training, in addition to receiving accredited participation certificates.

The two sides also discussed the importance of linking real-world industrial problems to graduation projects and postgraduate studies. This will be achieved through joint coordination between the department's professors and the company's specialized staff to identify technical problems and transform them into applicable research projects for master's and doctoral students. Furthermore, they discussed organizing scientific visits for postgraduate students to the company's research and development center.

The meeting also saw the proposal of an initiative to hold engineering and applied workshops during the summer and spring breaks. These workshops aim to enhance students' practical skills and prepare them for the job market. The activation of the "Visiting Engineer" program was also discussed, which would host engineers from the industrial sector and government agencies to deliver practical lectures at the college and share their professional expertise with students.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation to contribute to the development of the educational and research process and to strengthen students' connection to the industrial environment and the needs of the job market.
